What do Mexicans celebrate on Cinco de Mayo? Mexicans commemorate the victory of Mexican forces over French forces on Cinco de Mayo (The Fifth of May). Spain, Britain and France had sent troops to Mexico to force the country to pay its debts with them. President Benito Juarez made agreements with Spain and Britain, who recalled their armies, but the French stayed. Emperor Napoleon III wanted to dominate Mexico, installing his relative, Maximilian of Austria, as it's ruler.   Mexicans celebrate their victory in the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5 in 1862.
