Halloween Treats for Kids
As Halloween approaches there are many concerns that come to mothers’ minds regarding their kids’ safety. One of them is candy. I want my son to get delicious but safe and healthy treats, so I ought to make some for him and for the rest of the kids who will be coming to our Halloween party. Consider the following when planning what to serve for Halloween:
Safety First
As a mom of a 3 year old kid I do have some fears about the safety of the treats that he will get from trick or treat or from Halloween parties. Candies are not just bad for their teeth, most are also choking hazard. Other treats that may not be safe for small kids are mini cup jellies and other gummy candies. These can get swallowed and can easily block their small airways. Avoid serving these at your Halloween party and check that he doesn’t get them elsewhere.
Do not buy candies that replicate other items like toys, crayons, watches, and even medicine. We warn our kids that it is dangerous to put these things in their mouth. What would they think if they were able to eat sweet treats that look like these items? Obviously they might believe that the real ones are safe yummy treats as well.
Make Your Own Treats
The best treats my kid can get are the ones that I prepare. Not only can I be sure that they are safe, I can make delicious recipes that are also healthy. Choose treats that you can decorate with colorful Halloween designs such as cakes, cupcakes and cookies.
The easiest design you can make for a cake is a spider web. Bake a chocolate cake and draw a spider web on it using melted white chocolate. To make the spider web make a cross at the center (lines should reach the border of the cake) and then 2 diagonal lines through the center of the cross, dividing the cake in 8 sections. Then start connecting the straight lines with lines that curve to the central point. Draw rings of curved lines starting close to the center of the web until you reach the border of the web. Rings should be about an inch apart from each other.
You can also bake healthy oatmeal cookies in different shapes like witches hats, crescent moons, stars and pumpkins.
Fun from the Start
Your guests -especially the kids- can have fun even when the party hasn’t started yet. My son and his cousins really enjoy the part where they decorate the cupcakes. They are really creative. They make funny colorful monsters on them using sprinkles and colored icings. For healthier treats use blackberry muffins instead of cupcakes.
Serve Your Treats
Serve your treats on fun Halloween plates and serving bowls. I’ve seen many of these Halloween party supplies online. Browse the web for Haunted House Cupcake Stands, Pumpkin Trays and ghastly goblets to serve your Halloween treats and drinks.
I’ve seen one plastic drink dispenser online that looks like an old rusty IV stand. It would be fun to put strawberry juice in it for some bloody drinks. Another great Halloween supply that I’ve seen in the net is a plastic gruesome ice bucket in the shape of an autopsied head with sewn up lips. The top of the head comes off and has a knife sticking out of it. Take advantage of these Halloween party supplies and decorate a table fit for goblins and witches!
